John Bendzunas, Legislative Liaison

In the course of completing graduate studies at the State University of New York at Albany, I was introduced to the United States Probation system as a student intern in the Northern District of New York. In July 2000, I was appointed as a United States Probation Officer in the District of Vermont where I have been the Sentencing Guidelines Specialist since 2008. I have an interest in sentencing policy and practice and serve as the POAG representative for the District of Vermont. Additionally, I have served as the lead Officer Safety Instructor for the District of Vermont since November 2006.
In the Fall of 2009, I joined the FPPOA National Board as Legislative Liaison to lobby for the adoption student loan repayment benefits in the Federal Judiciary and to help disseminate information about student loan forgiveness benefits that apply to United States Probation and Pretrial Officers. I have been a regular newsletter contributor on this issue and continue to work on issues related to human resources, officer compensation and officer safety issues.
